Something so small had such a huge impact

This wasn't my first bike but it's certainly my most valued one. This bike truly changed my life.
I bought a used Schwinn from a bike rental store in the spring of 2008 as I moved to the outskirts of town and needed a quick, easy way to get around. It was sturdy, cheap and in good shape. I haven't been on a bike for about 20 years and it took me some time to find my legs again. I was shocked that I was in such terrible shape.

A couple months before I bought the bike, I lost my mother after a long illness, went through a messy break-up with my partner and had to put down my 16 year old cat due to poor health. It was a lot to digest in such a short time and I was quite depressed.

After riding my bike into town a few times, I realized just how enjoyable it was to be on a bike again. How could I have forgotten this? I started riding the Schwinn early in the mornings just for the sheer enjoyment of it. These morning rides quickly became an integral part of my daily routine and the best part of my day. I felt so happy, free and rejuvenated.

I ended up losing 35 lbs very quickly and was in the best shape of my adult life. I started going to the gym, watching what I ate and generally started to live a healthier and more active lifestyle. I've never looked back.

I had to move last year and only had limited space to move all my belongings. The dilemma was that the Schwinn was big and took up a lot of space, space that could be used for more essential items. I just couldn't leave it behind though, it meant too much to me.

I've since acquired a higher-end road bike that has replaced the trusty Schwinn for my morning rides, but I do take her out once in awhile for a good run and still enjoy every minute of it.  I take good care of her (better than my road bike actually) and hope she'll be by my side forever. I'm just so indebted to this bike and want to remind myself how something so small had such a huge impact on my life.
