Once upon a time in the SW desert…
Cindi E. - Salem, OR
Started cycling as my sole transportation while attending Arizona State University(in the medieval days of early early 80's : ). Became quite good at balancing my groceries, except once, on my trusty Trek. Senior year, two things happened, I began my student teaching 16 miles from campus...got on my bike every morning and took off! Sometimes to look really special, I even wore what no one ever knew while I was on that bike pedaling away in the desert...under my helmet were pink sponge rollers! Yep. Even monsoon season had me on my bike, hydroplaning now and then. I would ride after ward back to campus, eat, and head off to teach fitness classes at a local athletic club, paid my bills on campus!
Second thing to happen. While teaching one night, to 50+ sweaty folks, a guy in class introduced himself, they all do actually, great group as I recall. After that, no matter what time I taught, he appeared in my class, fit as ever. I come to find out he was cycling in from Phoenix as part of his after college training, to ride his bike around the world in one year. We met and had our first 'hiking' date up in the Mts., Lockett Meadow, it was beautiful and raining, loved the rain(another story is me accidently locking his keys in his dad's car while there, not a great first impression...). So, we couldn't cycle together too much, he was so fast, and I worked hard to keep up, but that was okay. Attended many of his duathlons. We married had three children, boom boom boom, all close in age. Moved to Oregon, and STILL cycle, just not together. A lot had happened over the years, we remain friends, and each of us still love to cycle! : )
