Mine was the coolest & the fastest

My first bike was a Schwinn Stingray with a banana seat.  I didn't care that all my friends had the same bike....mine was the coolest and the fastest.  When I wanted to go faster and farther, I graduated to a racing bike with gears.  I bought  an entry-level Peugeot 'ten-speed' using money I made mowing lawns in the summer.  The Peguet had Mafac center pull brakes and a leather seat.  It took me everywhere and lasted for years.  There was maintenance required after a tree branch caught in the front wheel, bending the fork and sending me over the top.  The front derailer was replaced at least twice and the wheels more than that.  It went with me to college, flew to Los Angeles for a ride up the coast to Santa Barbara during spring break, and hung in my kitchen in my first apartment.  It was finally replaced after a few decades and was sent to the second hand shop.  I think of both bikes each time I go for a ride these days...they started me on my life-long love of cycling!
