I started petitioning my parents

My first bicycle was a Firestone Monarch.  I fell in love with bicycles when I was 5 and 1/2 years old and learned to ride my friend's 20 inch bicycle. Then when I could ride it, I started petitioning my parents. My Mum wasn't too impressed because, never having been able to ride a bicycle, she and Dad had gotten me what she considered the utlimate, a 3 wheeled chain tricycle but it didn't coast like bicycles do and turned out to be very hard to ride (it was heavy too). Finally, my Dad got me the Firestone Monarch - he got me a 26 inch because he said he didn't want to keep buying me bicycles as I grew. I couldn't even sit down and pedal but there was something totally magic about this bicycle and I remember it with fondness.  Today I am in my 69th year and still biking - I have a Canondale recumbent bicycle and totally love it!
