I owe my life to bicycling

Walter Kallick - San Antonio, TX

Two weeks ago, I went to the doctor for a follow up appointment which involved a scan of my chest. The doctor addressed my condition in about two sentences and told me to get to a cardiologist immediately. The scan revealed significant calcium deposits in my coronary arteries. Allowing for just a couple of days to make and schedule doctor appointments, I was in the hospital having quadruple bypass surgery immediately - just like the doctor ordered My cardiologist tells me that I have literally no heart muscle damage, and my very high level of heart muscle strength saved my life. My heart literally pushed blood through the severely blocked arteries. He refers to my condition as the "widow maker," with the prime symptom being death. I am 66 years old, and have been riding Centuries and multi-day Charity rides since 1982.
