Cycling brought me back
On my 49th birthday I stepped on the scales in the morning and they told me I weighed 331 pounds. If I was 7'5" that would be just fine but I'm 6'2". I began working that day at getting back to my former self. I began the process to have bariatric surgery and after a 6 month education with my doctor and a dietician I had surgery. What I learned was that bariatric surgery is only a tool. I needed to get active again, I needed more tools in my pouch besides the healthy diet and a smaller stomach. For the last 10 years I watched a group of men all friends of mine 3 or 4 times a week ride and wave as they went by. I wanted a bike so bad I could taste it but I didn't think I could ride at my size. 2 1/2 months after surgery and lost 30 pounds by that time when my wife bought me a road bike. It was January in Northern Indiana so I immediately bought an indoor trainer and some videos and also trained indoors once a week with the local bike shop group. I have been in love with my bike every since. His name is Bill, Bill and I rode 1800 miles this past summer and 110 pounds later I'm headed indoors for the winter this year. Next year I'm going to compete in some 50 and over races. I can't wait!! Bottom line cycling has changed my life and my families lives and all for the good. My wife & 2 sons ride now my & daughter and her fiancé' were already riding. It doesn't matter if I'm riding with my family enjoying the scenery and each other or riding with my local group going for broke there's o place I would rather be then on my bike Bill absolutely anywhere!!
