COMMENTARY
I ride my bicycle for exercise and health and to explore new places. I am a bicycle tourist also.
A better future for bicycling here in America will look a lot more like Europe. They are 50 years ahead of us. I have bicycle toured in Great Britain, Ireland and Italy. The number of people in Europe that drive giant pick-up trucks and SUV's is tiny compared to us. When driver's in Europe come up on a bicyclist, they slow down, even if they have enough room to go by safely. I call this respect for others.
The problem has two solutions. Number one; get the giant vehicles off the road. People buy them because they think they are safer. Charge a huge add on tax.
The second solution is tougher; education. How much emphasis in driver's education classes or getting a driver's license is made about dealing with bicyclists on the highway? Hardly any. We are in a generational wasteland as far as education goes.
That's all I have for now. Good luck.
