Blue 1963 Schwinn American
My first bike was a blue 1963 Schwinn American. Dad negotiated the price down to $36.95 at the Benson Bike Shop in Omaha, Nebraska. That was the Christmas the first Schwinn Sting Rays were hot. They sold for $49.95 and I didn't get one. But dad convinced me the 26" wheels would go faster and farther and he was right. My Keystone neighborhood buddies and I would ride 10-miles out to Bennington,Nebraska in the country, Little League practice, school and to the corner store. We all rode bikes to play and visit one another. On Saturdays we'd go three miles to the Hobby Center in Benson and buy model cars or at least look at them. When my neighbor got his drivers license he sold me the Sting Ray I wanted for $12 with the original Persons solo polo saddle. I kept the Schwinn American but sold the Sting Ray when I went to High School. The American is still in my garage fifty years later. All original and scratched but she looks great to me.
