A Girl's Best Friend

It was a sunny Friday afternoon in August, and I was at work, wishing I were somewhere else. My boyfriend, Tom, texted to see if he could drop by my office in downtown Denver for a visit. This was strange behavior for him, but I didn't think much of it.

When he got there, he stayed outside, called me, and asked me to come out to the sidewalk. Again, strange behavior, but I agreed.

When I got outside, Tom was standing there with a shiny, red bicycle - a mixte with some cruiser style. I kissed him hello and asked whose bike it was.

"Uh, it's yours," he said.

I hugged and thanked him, then leaned over to check out the bike, a Civia Twin City Step-through.

"Wait, you got me a bike for no reason?" I asked. "It's not my birthday."

"Well, there is an occasion," he said. "Will you marry me?"

I grinned, laughed, sucked in a sob. "You mean ... that's my engagement bike?"

Tom nodded.

And then, I said, "Yes."
