The PeopleForBikes Retail Roundup Program is a new way for bike shops to contribute to the movement for better biking. It's as simple as this: ask your customers to round up their purchase to the next dollar with a donation to PeopleForBikes. We'll double the funds you raise and send them back out to support great bike projects in communities like yours. Keep reading to learn how to set up the program in your shop.
How does the roundup work in my point of sale system?
Most point of sale (POS) systems allow for the creation of a SKU set to round up a purchase to the next dollar. On the back end of the system, it’s typically easiest to list the SKU in your system as something like a gift card (or anything easily recognizable) so that the totals can be easily tracked in QuickBooks or whichever system you’re using.
If your system allows, you can add a small description on the receipt about PeopleForBikes. For example, you can add the message: “Thank you for your donation! Please visit PeopleForBikes.org to learn more.”
What are some talking points for customers?
We’ve found that a few simple talking points for the salesperson to communicate to the customers can make all the difference. It can be as simple as “Would you like to round up to the next dollar for PeopleForBikes?” It can also be helpful to do the math for the customers: “Would you like to donate 65 cents to help improve bicycling conditions?”
PeopleForBikes will also match every dollar raised in the roundup program—effectively doubling what our retailers collect—and distribute it back to communities through our Grants Program. While this may not be as simple to work into every pitch, customers who are on the fence about donating could possibly be swayed. Grant applications that come with a letter of support from participating Retail Roundup stores will enjoy special consideration during the review process.
When your customers do round up (or join PeopleForBikes via the sign-up sheet or app), please encourage them to take some buttons, stickers, and information cards that we’ll have available for you with the kit.
With all this being said, we don’t want to step on your toes in any way. If you have a system that works best for your salespeople, by all means use that. We understand that every store is diverse and you know the dynamics that work best for your customers and employees.
