California Action Alert: Sign the petition to save Safe Routes

Posted on Jan 23, 2013

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who signed the petition! Combined we gathered more than 7,000 signatures and delivered them to the governor's office. We'll let you know how the final bill turns out in June.

California governor Jerry Brown is proposing to change the way bicycling facilities are funded in the state. We are asking for your support of a petition that urges the Administration to first address several concerns, like restoring dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School—a proven program that builds safe places to ride for children (and everyone else on a bike).

Since 1999, Safe Routes to School has successfully increased bicycling rates and reduced injuries in California. It has resulted in 27% of Californian students biking or walking to school, more than twice the national average. California Highway Patrol reports show that fatalities and serious injuries to children bicycling have declined steadily over the last twelve years of Safe Routes to School funding.

Don't let Governor Brown do away with this essential program. The next generation of Californians deserve to be healthy, safe, and active—as do we all.

If you are a California resident, click here to sign the petition today!
